Shanghaiist Sunday Show: They Chose China

If you were a fan of Oscar-nominated filmmaker Shui-Bo Wang's Sunrise Over Tiananmen Square, you will also love his feature documentary, They Chose China, which tells the story of some of the 21 American soldiers who chose to stay in China after the signing of the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement. The film features some fascinating archival footage from China (watch out for the mini-Olympics held in the POW camps), American television clips and interviews with David Hawkins, the youngest of the group of defectors who is still alive today. Two other former POWs that feature heavily in this documentary are Clarence Adams, a black soldier from Memphis who chose to stay in China because of racial discrimination back home, and James Veneris, who became an avowed Communist, married, had children, and lived here till his death.

Just another moment of Canadian pride (cf. Canada's better-than-before performance in the 2010 Olympics): it seems you folks rather fancy NFB (National Film Board of CANADA) documentaries... awesome!

Me, too! Thing is, where do you see them? I mean, really, I rarely see them myself, so how do you folks find them and then post them? Really, please let me know. Is there a website or something?

Love the work you're doing - keeps me connected with what I've dubbed as my "Second home."

Cheers, "gan bei", "Xin Nian Kuai Le", and enjoy the Year of the Tiger,

Brent.

Congrats to Canada, for whipping the US in the game of the Olympics.

Enjoy it while it lasts as your players head to back to the US owned and managed NHL.

@Brent | The National Film Board of Canada's site is www.NFB.ca. You can add Shui-Bo Wang to your Facebook wall -- if you can get in, presuming you're not behind the GFW -- and he's a very personable guy.

Kenneth, would have been nice not to have a repeat for Sunday. I could suggest Shui-Bo Wang's second NFB documentary, in case your viewers would be curious for more.
