Midweek Music Preview: Gregory Harrington and two doses of The Routes

Trash A GoGo.jpg Live music offerings are pretty slim this mid-week, but we guess that with the JUE Festival having just come to a close, everyone needs some rest... at least until the weekend. On Saturday, choose between the classical smoothness of Irish violinist Gregory Harrington and the thumping beats of Japanese garage punk band The Routes at LOgO; if you really can't pick, The Routes will also be playing at Yuyintang on Sunday!

WEDNESDAY

The Gooda Boys, a Shanghai-based rock and roll band comprising Paco Garcia Marcone (vocals and rhythm guitar), Andres Barros (Bass), Davide Zabeo (drums) and Nathan Denny (lead guitar), come to Yuyintang for a night of fast-paced rock action.

FRIDAY

With a reputation for being the darkest rock band in Hong Kong, UNiXX stops in Shanghai to promote their second album, '7 Deadly Sins'. They've been described as "The Smashing Pumpkins unrestrained" and "The Cure with only the anger". It really sounds like some angry, explosive fun. Guest bands for the night are Boys Climbing Ropes, Tsat Jiu-band (79), and Jan & Yan. Tickets are RMB 40, and RMB 30 for students.

SATURDAY

We had an extensive interview with Irish violinist Gregory Harrington last week, and now it's time to hear him play! Harrington, a musician combining "velvet smoothness with intricate passion", comes to China for the first time to perform his special blend of classical and contemporary music. In concert with him is pianist William Lewis. Tickets are 300, 180, 120, and 60 RMB, and can be purchased here.

Chinese artists featured on record label MINI-E (a subsidiary of the Miniless label, founded by Han Han of Duck Fight Goose) come together for a night of electronic music exploration as they rework the boundaries of electronic music genres: trip hop, IDM, EBM, noise, ambient, "experimental" and etc. There are two parts to the night -- the live sets from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. and DJ sets from 10:30 onwards. Head to the new 696 Live House in Hongkou early to check out the originals from the following line-up: ConFirm-X, Sunye, and C.D.G.E. ("Crazy Diamond Gold Experience"). LOgO hosts the hilarious-sounding Trash A Go Go Vol. 2, a garage punk live party featuring a great mix of sounds from Japanese band The Routes. Move your hips to garage punk, surf and old-fashioned rock and roll. Opening acts are by Jehosaphat Blow, the Blah Blah Blah's, and the Beat Bandits. Don't think you're going home when the live music is over -- Soul DJs Akko, Sacco, and JahKinky Kleenex will also be spinning till dawn.

SUNDAY

If you couldn't get enough of Japanese garage punk band The Routes on Saturday at LOgO, catch them again tonight at Yuyintang where they'll be joined by local bands The Fever Machine (ex-Rogue Transmission) and Break for Borneo. RMB 40 cover.
