We mentioned before that various videos are being submitted to Youku for inclusion in the upcoming Beijing College Student Film Festival’s Short Films Awards when we highlighted Tina’s Life in Shanghai a couple months ago. Now Kaiser Kuo’s done everyone the favor of picking out some of his favorites – and lo and behold – one’s about Shanghai.
Moving is about a couple living in a nongtang (弄堂) who divorces ahead of the Expo in order to get two new apartments from the government when their old house is slated for destruction. We’d covered this phenomenon of getting rich quick by divorcing your spouse before.
(Also worth noting: The nongtang the family lives in is actually Dongjiadu. It’s interesting to see the perspectives of some of the non-nailhouse residents.)
The film is entirely in Shanghainese (though there are subtitles for those of us who don’t understand the dialect) and worth a watch. In fact, all five of Kaiser’s pics are good for a gander and I’m highly looking forward to see the winners when the competition ends.
