So the list of restaurants participating in Shanghai Restaurant Week went up on their site today and well… I guess it’s most restaurants you would expect to participate in a Shanghai Restaurant Week – aka, a bunch that you tend to be able to use your Enjoy Card at.
The Vargas empire is well represented, with Azul, Balthazar, Casa 13 sitting pretty at the top of Dining City’s list. So too is our spanking new Bund – almost the entirety of Three on the Bund (Laris, Jean Georges, New Heights) is participating, as well as Bund 18’s Mr. & Mrs. Bund. Surprisingly though, the only Xintiandi location to take part was T8. What’s the matter? Did Va Bene, TMSK, Ye Shanghai and Lawry’s all decide they were too good for Restaurant Weeks?
In fact, I can’t help hoping that maybe this isn’t the finalized list. After all, 23 restaurants to choose from is a pretty paltry selection – especially since, at a startling amount of these places, you could get well fed for the same 250RMB you’ll be spending on the “special” Restaurant Week dinner menu.
Maybe it’s a case of a bad sell on Dining City’s side and most of the fine establishments around the city chose to opt out this time around. Or perhaps, as far as Shanghai haute cuisine has come, it just hasn’t gotten fancy enough or gourmet enough to warrant tons of excitement when Restaurant Week comes to town.
