Everyone we’ve been talking to has been curious as to how the owners and investors of the new club in town could have blown US$15 million and still made it look like crap, so we got in touch with the Las Vegas architect Cagley & Tanner that is supposed to have designed the club. Below an exchange of emails between us and them:
Shanghaiist: I understand from the new Obama Club in Shanghai that Cagley & Tanner was involved in the design of the club? The ‘Projects’ section of your website touts a Garden Plaza VIP Club which I understand to be next door to but separate from the Obama Club. Could you please clarify?
C&T: Cagley & Tanner is involved in the design of a large portion of the overall club, but our section has not yet opened. The areas pictured so far are by another designer.
Shanghaiist: Thanks for the quick response, [name redacted]! I’m still a little confused: Is Obama Club your client? Or is the other section of the club designed by your company owned by someone else?
C&T: It is all owned and operated together. The Obama club owner is our client. The Obama club name was not yet chosen by the owner when we added the project images to our website. The portion that we designed will be the most beautiful and exclusive set of ktv rooms in all of China. The rooms also have a private rooftop garden. I repeat, we did not design the portion currently open to the public. We had nothing to do with the name either. [emphasis by Shanghaiist]
Uh. Can we still get invites when that new section opens up?
