So, here we go again with a question that we didn’t think would have more plot twists than Lost: Is Shanghai nightlife going to suck during the Expo? Current answer: Maybe. Maybe not.
First, a LOgO gig was interrupted, and then Yuyintang was visited by the police (with the temporary “borrowing” of their equipment). Then, Shelter announced that it was going to be closed “indefinitely” from this weekend. This was followed by the police assuring everyone that they were not going to shut anything down during the Expo. But then again, some bars and clubs will close earlier, at 2am. Head spinning, yet?
Now, City Weekend is now reporting that Shelter is not actually going to be shut down after all. They may have a modified schedule, but remain open.
Does this bode well for the rest of Shanghai nightlife? Will there simply be a step up of security? Is this just a diversion so angry and hungover night owls don’t do something…silly? Are the police being bipolar? So many questions. But for now, City Weekend remains optimistic:
There’s little word about what happened at The Shelter or whether they have tamed the Expo beast for good. But with the pomp and circumstance of the opening ceremony behind us, perhaps we can look forward to a relatively normal summer of parties.
So, the Expo nightlife status for now is: places are open, but may close earlier than usual, and, oh, bring your passport. Party on, people (for now).
