Shanghaiist’s Expo souvenir.
When the Singapore pavilion powers-that-be revealed their weird mascot last year, we pretty much crowned it the winner of the Worst Expo Rep Pageant 2010. The back story created for little Durian Star by the Singapore Tourism Board also won the Most Awful Narrative prize:
To help her poor son who’s always thinking about the pokey fruit all day long, Little Durian Star’s mum made him a delightful little costume. And now Little Durian Star looks like a little Durian.
Aren’t you glad your parents never indulged your cravings that way?
We passed by the Singapore pavilion the other day, and went in hoping to catch a glimpse of a live version of Durian Star. No such luck — there was no sign of the mascot anywhere except in the souvenir shop, where a 6-inch soft toy version is on sale for RMB 80.
Who is crazy enough to spend that much on a fugly toy? Um. In our defense, sometimes awfulness is irresistible.
