Two months ago, in Singapore, the naked body of a 24 year old Chinese woman, Li Hongyan, was found floating in the pool of a bungalow owned by a real estate tycoon located in the posh Sentosa Cove district. The woman had been working in Singapore at an Indian restaurant, but was moonlighting as a karaoke hostess. To raise funds for their trip to Singapore to claim her body, Ms Li’s family sold their 20,000 sq m plot of land in Heilongjiang province to a fellow villager. Touched by their plight, anonymous donors in Singapore raised S$35,000 (about RMB170,000) for the family — with which they were able to conduct last rites, buy their land back and start life anew. This audio slideshow was put together by Straits Times photojournalist Neo Xiaobin who accompanied the family over ten days on their return journey to Dalian, then Qiqihar via a 17-hour train ride, and finally a four-hour drive to Keshan County’s Li Ming Village.
