The news that Gary Heyne, beloved co-owner of one of our favorite microbrew/food establishments in Shanghai, came as an incredible shock this weekend. Gary leaves his family - wife San San and daughter Gracie - behind. His family has requested that he be interred in Texas, so Boxing Cat Brewery is now holding a fundraiser to help with the funeral costs and offer assistance to his wife and child.

Hi Everyone,Our dear friend, partner, beloved Brewmaster Gary Heyne passed away Sunday May 23rd between the hours of 5am - 7am. I know everyone has a lot of questions about what happened with Gary and we are all still trying to piece together his last moments. He was drinking with friends at the Minhang Boxing Cat and was last seen at the bar. A few people walked by in the morning and found Gary on the floor. It is still unclear whether he suffered from heart attack or stroke or another unknown cause.

The following Sunday June 6th at 3:00pm, we will have a party in Gary's honor at Boxing Cat on Fuxing Road. If anyone would like to speak at his wake or party, please email me and let me know. We are also asking that your favorite picture or pictures of Gary be emailed to mia (mianuyda26@yahoo.com) or Shari Rosen (rosen.shari@gmail.com) or dropped of at the Boxing Cat Fuxing Road (82 Fuxing West Road near Yongfu Road) by Friday May 28th. We will arrange a slide show for the funeral.
G leaves behind wife, San San and daughter G2 (Gracie). Because Gracie is only 2 years old, and will not have the chance to get to know her Dad, we are hoping that you will take the time to write her a letter talking about Gary, maybe the times you had together, tell her a bit about him as a person so that she can remember him through our stories. We will make these letters into a book for her....
Everyone is still in shock. Gary was not only my partner but a dear friend and brother to me. His kooky ideas, heart for people, love of brewing and passion for life will be more than missed. May he rest in peace and God bless his soul.
