So full disclosure: Back when I was in High School here in Shanghai, my friends and I started a charity project to help provide scholarships for disadvantaged kids in Yunnan Province. Flash forward about seven years and two out of our original founders are here living in Shanghai – I’m on this website and my friend is working for the non-profit that helped us distribute our funds to disadvantaged kids in Yunnan. And this weekend we’re coming together for our own little fund-raise-a-thon.
THE CAUSE: We’ll be raising money for the Concordia Welfare Education Foundation, which you can read more about here. CWEF is a Hong Kong based charity that works in Yunnan and Sichuan Provinces, as well as other parts of Asia. Their many development programs include building wells and latrines, providing scholarships, training village doctors, or providing microcredit loans to farmers, among other things.
THE ENTERTAINMENT: Happy hour all night at the Chalet, a rousing game of Shanghaiist Scrabble (we’ll be donating our giant awesome Shanghaiist Scrabble board for the night so you guys can play – rules rehash here), and possibly a live band too!
THE DETAILS: 50RMB cover, all of which will be going to charity. 7PM until whenever people decide it’s time to head on home. Venue is the Chalet at 385 Yongjia Lu near Taiyuan Lu in the French Concession.
