Tropical storm Agatha swept through Central America, killing 178 people and creating a giant sinkhole in Guatemala City that was so big that it swallowed an entire three-story building. Now that is some skill. Not to be outdone though, Chinese netizens have posted the country’s own crazy sinkholes.
ChinaSmack has translated a thread full of pictures of these freaky holes. Apparently, Yinbin City in Sichuan province contains over a dozen of them.
Sinkholes are formed by the chemical dissolution of carbonated rocks and are usually naturally occurring with a few instances of a sinkhole being formed by the collapse of a mine.
What’s curious though is that most of these sinkholes have occurred in the last year or so. 2012 conspiracists unite! Maybe the Mayans were right after all?
