Hurrah for the first day of Dragon Boat Festival vacation! You may have traveled, walked, rowed, slept…whatever floated your boat (ha!). Or, did you go to the Expo? Around 503,200 (the official count) did on Monday, pouring into Expo grounds under drizzling skies.
There were the expected outcomes for such massive holiday crowds, including 5-7 hour waits for the pavilions, packed Expo buses, and complications to watching performances (i.e. dodging umbrellas and peering between children on their parent’s shoulders). And smaller skirmishes, with serial line-cutting, and arguments of who could be let into VIP lines or not.
However, there were moments of genuine crowd-happiness, including audiences shouting an enthused “Yee-Haw” at the American Pavilion (in celebration of Texas Week), and gleeful cheers at the Brazilian giant-screen projection of the Netherlands-Denmark World Cup game (or maybe that was just me).
Let’s hope the holiday bonhomie continues. The crowds (reinforced by 9 million students who have just finished their exams) are expected to be just as large (or larger!) for the next few days (official count at 4:30pm today: 518,000).
