“Before, many Chinese directors used to think of Harvey [Weinstein] as a god, a savior, a person who would open the gates for Chinese movies to enter the international sphere. But now if you ask these directors, they will all say Harvey is a liar.”
“Chinese movies are similar to Chinese football! Like football, Chinese movies don’t lack funding, but the difference in skill from others is a huge one.”
— Feng Xiaogang, Director of Banquet (夜宴) and If You Are the One (非誠勿擾).
Said at a Shanghai International Film Festival forum on the cooperation between China’s movie industry and Hollywood. The “liar” comment followed a tirade against Weinstein for refusing to even look at any Chinese film made for under $8 million, only to refuse to buy any film for more than around $1 million. Besides insulting Weinstein and his own industry, Feng also called out “Hero” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” for being “Hollywood” movies rather than movies that actually represent what China is capable of.
