This week, get acquainted with one of Asia's biggest pop stars, or with local musicians making a name for themselves on the Shanghai scene. There's a little something for everyone with dubstep blended house music, a reggae-jazz fusion, East Coast hip hop and 3D-assisted electro.
Hopefully we managed to round up something to satisfy your live music appetite, and even gave you something to look forward to make it through the rest of the week. Happy Wednesday!
WEDNESDAY: Drop the Lime @ Mao Livehouse
Trouble & Bass leader, Drop the Lime, comes to Mao Livehouse for his first Shanghai performance. Having played some of the biggest festivals, including Coachella and Stereosonic, Drop the Lime will bring his jungle-inspired, bass-laden house jams, blending breaks, dubstep, house and drum and bass, and singing live vocals over his set. FRIDAY: Jay Chou @ Shanghai Stadium, Lions of Puxi with Theo Croker's Afro Sonic Orchestra @ Mao Livehouse, The Dudettes' Last Shout @ LOgO, DJ Premier @ The Shelter
Jay Chou, the dreamy Taiwanese pop star/actor/director, will be at the Shanghai Stadium this Friday with his R&B infused rock-pop. Getting as close as possible to see him live will cost you 1,680 rmb, but it's safe to say die hard Jay Chou fans will be happy to make that sacrifice. Lower priced tickets start at 180 rmb, and scalpers will probably be pacing the parking lot several hours before the show at 7.30pm, but if you'd rather not chance it, book some ahead of time. 666 Tianyaoqiao Lu, 天钥桥路666号
Two of Shanghai's own music startups join forces at Mao Livehouse Friday night. The Lions of Puxi will be joined by Theo Croker's Afro Sonic Orchestra for the Lions' last Shanghai show before heading to France for a three-week tour in July. Doors open at 9, and entrance is 65 rmb. 570 Huaihai Xi Lu Near Hongqiao Lu 淮海西路570号 近虹桥路
Anita Schwanz is saying farewell at LOgO for the Dudettes' Last Shout. Joining Anita and the Dudettes for their last set in Shanghai will be the Beat Bandits, Hotter Than Teppanyaki, Friend or Foe and Pairs. The evening will feature a Dudettes retrospective and plenty of rock to make it feel like a jam session in your friend's garage. No cover. 13 Xingfu Lu, 幸福路13号
As fans of DJ Premier know, the East Coast producer has worked with everyone from Jeru the Damaja and Kanye to KRS-One and Nas, and those fans will be at the Shelter Friday night. Supported by the Lab Crew, Sickstar and Deville, the event kicks off at 10, but entrance is a little steeper 150 rmb. Check it out if you're in the mood for old school hip hop that samples jazz, funk and soul that would make both Grandmaster Flash and Nina Simone proud. 5 Yongfu Lu, 永福路5号
SATURDAY: Acid Pony Club @ Dada, Chris Willis @ Bar Rouge
Dada is throwing its first ever 3D party "The Laboratory". With an original installation by Tina Sprinkles featuring original and vintage 3D visuals, the music is supplied -- mixed and produced -- by the Acid Pony Club and Casie Lane. You are encouraged to wear white, and don't worry -- free 3D glasses will be handed out at the door (maybe keep 'em for Toy Story 3?). No cover charge, starts at 10pm. 115 Xingfu Lu, near Fahuazhen Lu 幸福路115号, 近法华镇路
Bar Rouge is bringing David Guetta's go-to vocalist, Chris Willis, to Shanghai. You might have heard him on Guetta's "Love is Gone" and "Getting Over" featuring Fergie and LMFAO, but Willis is out to prove that he's a dance music talent in his own right. See him at Bar Rouge at 10pm, entrance is 200 rmb, and appropriate dress is required (it's Bar Rouge, after all). 7/F, 18 Zhongshan Dong Yi Lu, 中山东一路18号外滩18号7楼
