It’s one thing to be worried about fake identity cards in China, but nothing drives the point home quite as hard as actually creating a great fake… with U.S. President Obama as your avatar of choice. Reporters investigating the matter made this fake which, besides being Obama, is virtually indistinguishable from a real Chinese identity card.
The culprit behind the fake identity cards is a powerful software, downloadable from the internet, that can be used easily to generate not only a “first-generation Residence ID card,” but a “second-generation ID card” as well.
The difference between the two generations are the protection measures – while Gen One only involves a polyester plastic film and an anti-counterfeit laser logo, Gen Two has an IC chip, a holographic Great Wall image and more… all for naught, apparently.
So what’s the big deal with fake identity cards?
The Residence ID is, for many in China, the only indentity card they have and thus, the only identity card they need to start bank accounts, get loans, and all that other stuff. By faking one, fraudsters could defraud banks pretty easily… by faking yours, fraudsters could defraud banks in your name pretty easily.
Police said, like with any counterfeit, you should be able to tell the difference between a real one and a fake one if you look closely enough. That having been said, if the place only needs people to provide “copies of their ID cards,” – Police argued those places are rare, but I know that at least China Post never cares if I bring in a copy – the two are too similar to determine.
