Gong Li, who was only just seen in Shanghai promoting her movie of the same name, has allegedly split up with her Singaporean husband, Ooi Hoe Seong, according to The Straits Times.
Rumors of the split surfaced after the actress told Lianhe Zaobao that she tends to stay in hotels whenever she visits Singapore. In the interview, she also said she moved to the island nation for her kids and “No matter what other people say, I am Chinese.”
The actress drew a lot of flack from the Chinese public in 2008 when she first converted to Singaporean citizenship. It became a constant topic of contention, with Gong Li needing to reiterate that she was devoted to Chinese movies, no matter what her passport says… because, apparently, being taxed like any other Chinese citizen is way more important than doing things like campaigning to end hunger in your home country.
Anyhow, now that they have split up, the big question is: Will Gong Li become Chinese Chinese again? Or will she stay the course with fellow star/humanitarian Jet Li, retain her other country citizenship but continue to do good in China?
