Bad news for Shanghai Shenhua from the club’s owner himself! Apparently Zhu Jun, the major investor in our town’s football league, went to see Paul the Psychic Octopus in Germany this week and got a bad prediction for the team. They will not win the Chinese Super League Championship this year.
Paul the Octopus became famous when he predicted with 100% accuracy the winner of Germany’s seven matches at the World Cup, as well as Spain’s win for the final. He makes his divinations by being presented with two boxes containing a mussel (apparently, an octopus treat as well as a human one). Each box is marked with the flag of a national football team in an upcoming match and whichever box he chooses is the team that would win.
His winning prediction for Spain netted him a “record breaking” transfer price, with the Madrid Aquarium promising to give “whatever demanded” to ship him to Spain. His German keepers have refused, saying that he’s retired and will concentrate on playing with his handlers and “making children smile.”
His status as retired oracle hasn’t stopped Zhu from claiming that the octopus did make one final prediction though. Paul was allegedly “given the choice between two bottle caps, printed with the numbers 1 and 0. Winning the championship was represented by the number 1 and failure by the number 0. Paul picked the “0,” Zhu said.”
Wait, does that mean Zhu threw bottle caps into Paul’s tank? FOR SHAME, Zhu.
