So the big event this weekend is no doubt the music festival happening in nearby Suzhou – The Suzhou Holisland Music Festival, but in case you can’t make it out, or you don’t like live music, there’s still a whole bunch of things to do here in the city.
And by a whole bunch, we mean everything from dance performances to actor workshops to charity fairs and doggy outings to DMC championships to your regular super parties. Seriously, this weekend is PACKED.
Why is it that all things good happen at once?
Ever wanted to be an actor? East West Theater is hosting an actor workshop with visiting director and lecturer Ms. Rosie Hughes, who has trained at Desmond Jones School of Mime and Physical Theatre, École Philippe Gaulier and The International School of Commedia del arte. On Friday, she’ll be teaching the workshop “The Actor as an Open Book,” which aims to encourage actors to open out their bodies and give strong, committed, energised performances.

Vienna Cafe is hosting a one woman show with Ms. Anita Michaels called “The Kindness of Strangers,” featuring excerpts drawn from her prose poetry and scenes from some of the greatest 20th century American playwrights’ works. Three up and coming Dutch choreographers will be presenting their works at the World Expo – before that, you can check them out tonight at the Dutch Culture Center. This dance performance and workshop session is composed of three short performances, God Studies by Kenneth Flak, Prospect Future by Joeri Dubbe and 15 Minutes Universe by David Middendorp. RMB50.

Celebrating the renovation of Downstream Garage, “Pick it Up” is a contemporary dance show consisting four dance and physical theater performances by five Shanghai-based choreographer /dancers, as well as three solo acts. Some of the dancers are staples in one of our favorite Shanghai dance troupes, Jin Xing Dance Theater.

The DMC Championships have hit Shanghai again! Watch over a dozen DJ hopefuls battle it out for the the title. Last year’s champ, DJ HBD, will be around to defend his position. Head over to Zhijiang Dream Factory to watch sparks fly. Cover: 80rmb.

Jaiya’s Animal Rescue is teaming up with Qiu Qiu pet for a fun pets party out in Nanhui. Since it’s a little far out, there’ll be a pick up service from People’s Square at 9am to take guests to the party. Volcom teams up with The Source to host a backyard BBQ-themed party. There will be a live band, grass on the floor of The Source, and beer and hotdogs. Also, since it’s The Source, expect screen printing workshops and lots of Shanghai designers strutting around. Entry is free.
