Even more exciting transportation news: workers have begun laying the tracks for the highly anticipated Shanghai to Beijing high-speed railway. The $220.9 billion yuan project will span three municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai) and pass through four provinces (Hebei, Shandong, Anhui and Jiangsu), connecting by rail nearly a quarter of the country’s population.
And it’ll be speeding these people through at 350km per hour! That means a trip between the economic and political capital will be cut down to less than five hours – only a little more than the time it’d take to wait around in Hongqiao Airport, take the hour-long flight up north, and then taxi yourself in from the far out Beijing Capital International Airport. And it’s coming by the end of this year!
