After slates of unexplained delays, it seems that the famous Peace Hotel on the Bund (now called the Fairmont Peace Hotel) is finally set to reopen… tomorrow!
Originally, the hotel was slated to open along with the Bund in late March, but tourists hoping to catch a glimpse of its storied floors were disappointed by very obvious construction still happening behind locked gates.
Now Xinmin reports that the grand opening will be held tomorrow, July 28, and that the hotel itself will be open to customers on July 29. Construction still isn’t finished though – only some of the 256 rooms will be available to actually sleep in (does this mean that if you do sleep in one of them, you’ll get to hear non-stop drilling? That’s a Shanghai experience down to the tee).
When it’s done, however, the 81-year-old baby of Victor Sassoon will be one of the most expensive hotels in the city, with nine suites modeled after different countries and a total of five restaurants and lounges.
If you’re interested in some Peace Hotel history, covered it back when the hotel was closing for renovations three years ago.
