Through the haze in China... is more and more haze

We are all familiar with the imposing skyline of Shanghai, it's been voted the 4th best in the world. But us residents are even more familiar with the thick smog that clings to the buildings, producing ghostly silhouettes. Despite previous reports that the smog levels in China were receding, the authorities have now reaffirmed that China’s air quality is worsening.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection silently landed two destructive blows when they announced that in the first quarter of this year, China's air pollution rose (the first quarterly rise since 2007). They swiftly backed this up early this week when they announced that so far this year, the air quality has been at its worse since 2005! As if the humid heat wave we’re all suffering from wasn’t enough!

Should we be so surprised though? With most of the things the world now owns being made in China, one of the key players contributing to the smog is - you guessed it - factories. There has been a colossus increase in particle pollution levels such as soot, with levels across China rising to 0.091 milligrams per cubic meter. This time last year, levels were at just 0.002 milligrams per cubic meter.

And, if you've noticed the ever-growing amounts of rush hour traffic, you've seen the other major contributor to bad air quality: the surge in automobile ownership has also led to increased pollution levels.

Alas, there is no need to rush to the shops for your gas mask and pegs just yet. The authorities are taking action. You may remember that back in 2009 we reported that high polluting vehicles were being banned from downtown Shanghai. The great cleanup campaign that is currently underway throughout China, as well as the environmental review measures that are taking place, will soon be helped along swiftly when the Ministry of Environmental Protection close 468 outdated and inefficient power generators across China.

Until the great cleanup is complete and the sky is clear and blue, (what?! It could be possible!), why not keep track of the air pollution index of Shanghai here.

China is a mess, and it keeps getting worse. Pollution is on the rise, food safety continues to grow more critical, and construction accidents keep killing more people because of government corruption and overall greed. And what of all the government actions over the past several years that were supposed to prevent this from happening? Stuff and nonsense.

How do you count the air pollution index on the environment govt website ?

What are the units of left side's particle, and how do you translate this into API ?
