It’s Monday and it’s a time for a brand new edition of Pencil This In, where we sum up some of stuff going on in Shanghai during the weekdays. This week there’s frat boy Olympics, jazz tunes, movie showings and even classical opera!
Today at OZNZ is the Bar Olympics. It’s basically a meeting of all the frat boys in the city. There’s going to be beer pong, darts, pool, blackjack, and Wii Playoffs. The grand winner of the tournaments wins a bottle of vodka. So for those of who are young at heart or college kids on vacation, hit up OZNZ for some close-to-home comforts. The House of Blues and Jazz on the Bund lives up to their name with a jazz show tonight featuring Swing Gum, a Shanghai-based French band. Their musical styles include Gypsy-jazz, French folk, and swing music. The show starts 9:30 and there’s no cover charge.

LOgO gets the party started this Tuesday with the KINETIK Dance Lab featuring Humengosaurus Flex (HMSF). HMSF brings their Los Angeles techno and electro sound to the dance floor. Mau Mau will also be hosting the event. LOgO will even be awarding the best dancer of the night with free baijiu. Doors open at 10:30.

For their subculture cinema night, Dada will be showing the movie Brazil (1985). The movie is a technocratic love song set in the probable future. The movie stars Robert de Niro and Bob Hoskins. Doors open at 8 and the movie starts at 9. No entry fee.

Classical music minded culture mavens will rejoice this Wednesday: La Bohème is playing at the Shanghai Grand Theater. La Bohème is one of the world’s most famous operas and is among the most performed operas ever. The Teatro Regio, the company bringing La Bohème to Shanghai, is only in town for two days, August 4 and August 6. So expect a big crowd. The show starts at 7:30 on both nights.

This Wedneday Gosney & Kallman’s Chinatown presents The Big Tease-Ladies Night. Ladies will learn Showgirl techniques from Lavender Chase, Shanghai Lil, and Ginger Knight. The lessons start at 8 PM and run til 11. Call ahead for reservations. Phone number is 6258-2078.

The Shelter is where it’s at Thursday night with ROM. They bring their dubstep, hip hop, ratchetcore, and dark electronic music to the Shelter. The Shelter is calling the show “music from a violated future” so that sound promising. Cover charge is 20 RMB.

Pecha Kucha Night is back and in full gear this Thursday night with 15 speakers presenting 20 original designs in a 20 second time frame. Speakers include Nevile Mars (Dynamic City Foundation) and Yereem Park (Zaha Adid Architects).
