Could China score a goal in English football? It certainly looks that way. Liverpool locals (fondly known as ‘scousers’) are having to ‘calm down, calm down’ after hearing the latest news in English football. China could soon be taking over Liverpool Football Club.
You may remember that back in May, we reported that Zhu Jun, founder of the Chinese gaming company; The9 Ltd, was in talks over buying Liverpool FC. Well; the stakes have certainly been raised and the East could soon be making a big impact on Western football as the Chinese Government are now being reported as being the lead bidders in the Liverpool FC take over.
Liverpool and Shanghai are ‘sister’ cities, Liverpool is home to the largest Chinese community in Europe, and Liverpool is the only city in the World to have its own pavilion at the Expo. However, these sisters could soon be getting a hell of a lot closer if the states overseas investment body (the CIC), being led by Kevin Huang, is successful in its bid; reported at being between £300 million and £350 million.
The CIC has recently sold off shares equating to the value of the debt owed by the debt-laden football club. Alas; Kevin Huan has refused to discuss the matter at length stating ‘We will not confirm or deny any matter in relation to the Liverpool Football Club unless and until we and the representatives of Liverpool FC have chosen to do so jointly’. China is currently bidding against a rich Kuwaiti family and an American Private Equity company. If they hold the winning bid, they will be the second overseas state to control an English Premier League team.
So, it may not be in the too distant future that the Chinese National flag is flying above the teams Anfield Ground.
