SmartShanghai informs us that September not only brings to Shanghai its second Restaurant Week, but actually its second Cuisine Festival as well! And both are striving to be much better than last year.
Thank goodness, because last year’s Cuisine Festival was kind of a rip off. After paying 150RMB for the entry fee, I went in to find restaurants offering food for the same price they would have at their regular restaurants – sometimes even more. Free samples were almost impossible to come by and nothing there was a) haute, b) something you couldn’t get anywhere else for cheaper. Honestly, who goes to a Cuisine Festival for barbeque chicken?
In fact, if they hadn’t lowered the admission this year to FREE, I would have called a giant pox on them. Now that you can just stroll on in, why not give it a try? If they’re still as ungenerous about their food, you can walk right out, head down about three blocks and go to Wujiang Lu for some Yang’s Fried Dumplings instead.
The festival runs from September 17 to 19 at the Shanghai Exhibition Center (you know, the Soviet-looking building across from the Portman Ritz Carlton). You can read more about it on its site: www.thecuisinefestal.com
