Weekendist: Chili, art and alcohol

weekendist logo 2.jpg It's only bl**dy Friday, and we all know that means - Weekendist! Every Friday we bring you the hottest picks of the coming weekend, and boy do we have some treats for you! This weekend is serving up contemporary art, free, yes that's FREE beer, a flea market, a chili cook off, urban art, gallery openings and a rooftop party. Also, running the course of the weekend is ‘SHcontemporary’ at the Shanghai Exhibition Centre. Now in its 4th year...a must see.

FRIDAY

Sports bar ‘Windows Scoreboard’ begin their ‘100 Keg Giveaway’ this weekend. Yes, they have decided that for the month of September they will give away 100 kegs of beer for free...that’s 6000 pints of Bud and TsingTao; for free! 13 hours of beer freebies awaits you this weekend; the promo starts at 4.30 - 11 Friday and Saturday. We can’t help but wonder what were they thinking, actually who cares? FREE BEER!

From today, Maoming Lu gallery (Andrew James Art) will be home to the work of Lady Aiko, who brings to Shanghai (by way of Tokyo and New York) vibrant mixed-media stencil, spraypaint and silkscreen works that "playfully portray feminine sexuality and beauty." The opening is tonight, 6 - 9.

Contemporary Art Gallery, ‘LOH’, is the latest gallery to open in the M50 art complex on Moganshan Lu. The work of Luo Guangyao focuses on blending Asian and European culture and seeks to promote international relationships between artists. This evening marks the opening party. Starting at 7pm, the reception is open to all!

The latest White Doll party hits NODE lounge tonight. Tania Satori and guests will be dropping tunes for you aural pleasure whilst Shanghai’s ‘hottest all-girl party crew’ - Doll House, will be offering free body painting! The dress code is WHITE (kind of obvious, huh?) and for 100RMB you get 12 drink tickets.

SATURDAY

Our favourite charitable group, BEAN, is holding a cookie and coffee both at this month’s charity flea market. All proceeds will go to benefit Stepping Stones, a local charity that teaches English in migrant schools. Get your bargain hunting hats on and chow down on some freshly baked cookies! You’re going to need to line your stomach for the Chilli cook off later! The flea market runs between 11am - 5pm.

Pistolera Mexican Grill and Cantina over in JinQiao is hosting its 1st Chilli cook off! For only 50RMB you get to test all of the chow submitted and post your opinion for the ‘People’s Choice Award’. The chilis submitted by contestants are sure to vary in meat, heat, flavor and post-digestive pleasures, but whatever the fixins, they’re sure to go down better with an ice-cold Sol beer (25rmb) or a tangy margarita.

China’s third annual Capoeira Batizado will be a visual and musical extravaganza showcasing capoeira and Brazilian dance and musical performances. In addition to the dedicated local students, there will be professional “mestres”, dedicated experienced instructors from Brazil, Japan and the USA. To watch the performance is free, however, if you would like to attend the dinner party at Latina Restaurant (all you can eat and drink) at 8pm then that’s 170RMB. Demolish, Construct, Repeat: Building the Shanghai Dream. Southern Barbarian in Pudong celebrates the street photography of Sue Anne Tay, a Shanghai-based photographer, focused on the city's disappearing neighborhoods. Her show contrasts the migrant workers who are building the new Shanghai with the locals whose lives are changing forever, as the city changes. The exhibit will run for a month. SB will have a complimentary spread of Yunan snacks, beer and wine. Do note that SB has a formidable beer selection! No entrance fee.

SUNDAY

The Ice Cream Truck is back in town and ready for you to lick their lollipop. Back on their favourite rooftop with 360 degree panoramic views of the city, DJ’s: Jung & Kelly (REHAB) and Milan J (Wonky Kong) -- Mau Mau and Adept do their thang and let you eargasm to house and dirty electro. The party starts at 2pm (free entry before 5pm, one drink minimum after) and runs through until midnight.
