Recent pictures on the MOP forums have shown images of sharks, mouths gaping open, butchered and put on sale at undisclosed Wal-Mart locations here in China. Nobody says what city they’re in, but a disproportionate amount of the posts are found in Shanghai forums. Does that mean this Wal-Mart is somewhere in Shanghai? Yao Ming would not approve.
Wal-Mart has been shown acclimating to local tastes before – one of its stores is renowned for their crocodile meat… but I was under the impression that sharks were an endangered animal (Guess not: further research finds that both China and Japan voted down measures to protect them).
Endangered or not though, what’s surprising is that anyone would want to eat any other part of the shark besides its fin. Shark meat is notorious for being tough and stringy – it’s why sharks fin fishers tend to throw the rest of the shark back into the water. Funnily enough, this is something countless netizens are pointing out. I suppose the silver lining of this scenario is that people aren’t wasting the rest of the animal anymore.
Above was the least bloody picture of those featured (I know we’ve got a pretty high percentage of veggie/vegan readers on here). If you can stomach it, the rest of them are here.
