Yesterday, around 11:20am, a woman committed suicide by jumping from the gym located on the 7th floor of Raffles City mall in People’s Square. She broke through the roof of the Coldstone Creamery in the food mall and passed away. She was 20 years old.
While most businesses in Raffles City went back to normal as soon as the body was taken away, Coldstone had notices up saying their “business has been suspended.” The glass frame on their roof had been smashed through, and half was hanging in the air. Guards were around to prohibit people from taking pictures and stopping too close to the stall. Besides the woman, nobody else was hurt from the incident.
“It was so shocking!” one witness, Mr. Bao said. “Suddenly I heard two ‘bang’ sounds and then somebody screaming ‘someone jumped off!’ I ran to see what was happening and the ice cream shop was surrounded by people”
The police are still investigating, but her mother has already come out to say she was suffering from mental issues.
Said another witness, “The young lady had already been unhappy for two days, so her mother took her on an outing. They had gone to Physical Fitness & Beauty on the 7th floor to get a refund on a card but were rebuked. After that, the young lady asked her mom to hold her bag while she went to the toilet, who knew she’d jump off the balcony edge?
Staff of Physical Fitness said they hadn’t heard of this happening.
According to some sources, China’s women are especially prone to mental health problems – it is the only country in the world where more women commit suicide than men. It is so common that suicide ranks as the No. 1 cause of death for women aged 18 to 34 – though rural women are the most vulnerable.
