While Arnold Schwarzenegger’s visit to Expo, and his profession of love for our railways, may have gotten the most attention, he was by no means the only American leader who was impressed. Chicagoist reports that their mayor, Richard Daley, also left Shanghai wanting some of that railroad magic.
And it seems like Daley was especially enamored of the maglev that connects Longyang Lu to Pudong International Airport. He specifically pointed out that Chicago also ought to invest in a high speed rail between O’Hare Airport and the city.
From The Sun Times:
Daley noted that his entourage hopped on a high-speed train at the Shanghai airport and arrived at a stop just outside downtown seven minutes later.
“You have to have a high-speed train from your international airport to downtown. … That will rebuild our commercial market and our hospitality industry,” he said.
“Great cities have [a] high-speed train from the airport downtown. … Once you make that contact from the airport downtown, it keeps building your downtown businesses, jobs and taxes, and that’s what you have to have.”
Okay, so Longyang Lu is nowhere near “just outside downtown” – even when Shanghai traffic police have cleared the highway for your limo. But ain’t it nice to see out-of-towners get so invigorated our six year old vanity project? Hopefully Daley’s thinking more regular high-speed rail and not maglev though – we get the feeling protests here get nothing like they do in Chicago.
