Less than a week since take-off, China’s second lunar probe, Chang’e 2, has hit a spot of bother. Parts of the unmanned carrier fell on to two villages in Jiangxi province, though no casualties have been reported.
According to Italian website Cina Oggi, residents were startled by the sound of two loud explosions, which they initially believed to be an earthquake. It was when they went to investigate that they noticed pieces of the carrier strewn across the ground.
Expected to reach the moon within five days of lift off, Xinhua has said the carrier will circle 15km above the terrain to photograph potential landing locations with its one-metre resolution camera.
