The organizers of Shanghai Pride have now released the details of China’s first and only Pride festival – and this year it’ll be a three week affair! Shanghai Pride 2010 will run from October 16 to November 6. According to its press release:
The three-week festival, put together by a small group of gay and straight volunteers from different walks of life, aims to celebrate China’s estimated 40-130 million LGBT individuals around the theme “Diversity. Unity. Harmony”.
Following in the tradition of ShanghaiPRIDE’s inaugural event in 2009, the 2010 festival will comprise mostly of a series of small, indoor events held at private venues. The festival will include film screenings, art exhibitions, parties, panel discussions and more. Members of the LGBT community are highly encouraged to bring along their friends, family members and colleagues to join in the festivities.
Organisers of ShanghaiPRIDE 2010 are promising a “pride festival with Chinese characteristics” — one that seeks to raise the awareness of the general public about the LGBT community without the protests and parades that have come to be associated with similar festivals elsewhere.
