In our ongoing Threesday feature, Shanghaiist takes the time to count out three of well… whatever catches their fancy that week. This week: DIY Robot costumes to be used in our robot march this Halloween!
There’s nothing more fun than dressing up for Halloween but, despite the increasing popularity of Halloween parties around town (yeesh, let’s just say the competition’s getting harsh!), Shanghai shops have yet to step up. Unfortunately, the places to buy a ready made outfit are basically the same as last year’s places. So why not get into the do-it-yourself spirit? Shanghaiist helps you get dressed specifically for our Halloween party: Haibot Apocalypse 2010 with three easy DIY robot-themed costumes.
There’s a lot of Brits in Shanghai, and where there are people from the United Kingdom, there are fans of Doctor Who. So what better way to show your love of the doc than by dressing up as his most hated enemy – the Dalek.
Luckily, fanatical Who fans everywhere have already posted DIY instructions on how to be a Dalek (here’s the official BBC blueprint, if you want to go super authentic). All you need to do is to get some cardboard (and who doesn’t have a few boxes lying around?), a toilet plunger and a sufficiently mean personality. Dress up, buck down and EXTERMINATE ANNIHILATE DESTROY!
1. iPhone Face-bot
Of course, the easiest thing to do with that same cardboard box is cover it with aluminum foil and whatever knick knacks you have lying around the house. There are sooo many robot costumes you can make, just a few of which are documented here. Here’s one we thought was particularly clever:
Sure, this is most useful if you already have an iPhone… but I’m going to go out on a limb and say a lot of our readers do. All you need is a box, some easy-to-find-if-you-don’t-have-it-already office supplies and the MouthOff iPhone app. Voila! You’ve got a really cool robot head! Here’s a Youtube tutorial.
As an added bonus: one of the best DIY robot costumes we’ve seen popped up on our radars just recently. Check out LCD Soundsystem’s new song, Home.
3. The Rocketeer
Alright, so he wasn’t quite a robot, but the steam punk machinations of The Rocketeer plus this super cool DIY Rocketeer rocket pack put it onto this list of awesome things to build before Halloween. Seriously – how cool does it look? Even if you didn’t want to go as the Rocketeer (maybe you hate old Disney movies or Jennifer Connelly, I don’t know), what robot couldn’t use a jet pack?
The best thing is that it actually uses trash as a source of its materials – so you’re recycling too!
