Shanghai Expo Closing Ceremony: What are those Haibaos doing?
With the close of the Expo, the municipal government has released this nice (and glorious) statement thanking the public for their help in hosting the world fair. We’ve translated it for you guys below.
Dear Friends and Members of the Public,
Under the judicious guidance of the state council and with the enormous support on all fronts from the people in the nation, the 2010 Shanghai World Expo that will come to a close on October 31 has been a resounding success. Here, we express our sincere gratitude and highest respects to the residents of the city.
Following in the footsteps of the Beijing Olympics, the Shanghai Expo was another world class event. Holding the World Expo is a glorious mission that was entrusted to us and in the eight years since we won the bid and especially in the 184 days duration of the event, everybody has played a part in helping it succeed. [The people] gave their broad support and enthusiastically played host–ensuring that the park is running smoothly and orderly, that the traffic is safe, the environment, clean and beautiful, also offering quality and efficient service and maintaining a happy and peaceful atmosphere–all to make the Shanghai World Expo successful, exciting, and unforgettable. Every person has made a significant contribution in helping win Shanghai and the nation the honor of writing a chapter in the history of the Expo. We feel proud on behalf of all the people in the city.
The success of the Shanghai World Expo has vividly interpreted the theme of “Better City, Better Life”, greatly enriching the meaning of that spirit in Shanghai and also deepening our urban construction and management philosophy. We will delve into the innovative results we’ve garnered from the exhibition and put that towards learning more on urban development, carefully writing the “After the Expo” chapter that comes next.
We will strive to use this experience to form good, long-term mechanisms to promote city development so that the tomorrow of Shanghai to be even better, to allow the lives of people to be even better.
Let’s come together under Hu Jintao using Deng Xiaoping’s theory of the “Three Symbols” as our guide and thoroughly implement the scientific learning we’ve gained, passing down the legacy of the Expo and promoting the spirit of the world fair. For Shanghai to become one of the “Four Centers”, for the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, let’s strive!
[We] sincerely wish the people health and good luck!
