Shanghai loves it’s ladies, that’s for sure. In this town, members of the fairer sex can drink every night for free so easily. The only real problem: there’s too many options when you’re looking to have a fun night out with the girls. So in this series, we hit up all the ‘ladies only’ specials around town to rate them. That way you’ll know which are worth a sip, and which you ought to skip
What: Wednesdays at the Park Hyatt’s 100 Century Avenue Music Room
Where: 92F 100 Century Avenue, Pudong; 上海浦东世纪大道100号, 环球金融中心92层
Drink: Free sparkling wine from 8:30pm to 10:30pm. We don’t remember what they were pouring but seeing as it’s the Park Hyatt, it was probably decent.
Difficulty of bar access: Medium to high. It’s not impossible, but you got to get those elbows out.
Music: I usually detest live bands, but the performances from Deluxe, who do a damn good cover of the Black Eyed Peas, were fantastic. Other than the Peas, they switched off with DJ Jazz Amar to play some harmless fun R&B, funk, and top 40. Oh, Shakira, Shakira!
Atmosphere: It’s not a particularly large bar but it is the highest one…in the world! So don’t forget to take a peek out the window when you’re there. The bar is decorated with hundreds of white objects dangling from the ceiling which is kind of random (wait, is that a boot?) but cool. The crowd is a little swish, but fortunately not bordering on pretension yet.
Female to Male ratio: 3:1. In all my years of gallivanting around town taking advantage of ladies night specials, this is the first busy bar that the scales were so heavily weighted on the female side. It might be because Park Hyatt prices are so unkind to wallets but men, the odds are so deeply tilted in your favor, you might just want to stop by. If you can’t make it here, you can’t make it anywhere–just sayin’.
Overall: It can be a journey in itself getting there. It’s on the Pudong side and requires multiple ear-popping elevator transfers so it’s smarter to start your night here. One big downer though is the lack of purse storage. How is a girl meant to “put her hands up in the air” if she’s bogged down by a bag, huh? C’mon Park Hyatt. In a nutshell, if you don’t want to be bothered by any males but do want an excuse to get gussied up, you’ll be at home here.
