Sha Zukang, the same Chinese top UN official whose drunken rant against Ban Ki-moon and the United States a few weeks ago made headlines, has just given a “Global Harmony” award to Chi Haotian, the general in charge of the infamous crackdown on protesters in 1989. It remains unclear whether Sha gave the award as an acting UN official, and also whether he plans to continue doing/saying things his colleagues most definitely would not be fond of.
General Chi acted as Chief of Staff of the PLA during the clash in Beijing, and has since strongly defended the force used against demonstrators. This “Shanzhai peace prize” was offered to Chi by the World Harmony Foundation for his role as Defense Minister in improving China’s relationship with the world through military diplomacy. Let’s just hope rumors of his crazy plans to bio-nuke and invade America are indeed false…
When questioned about the nature of the award, a spokesperson for UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon claimed to know nothing about it. Ban is currently causing some controversy himself over his silence regarding human rights in China during his four-day visit in the country.
Sha has been in and out of the UN’s good graces, causing repeated controversies and earning himself the nickname “China’a John Bolton.” With Ban Ki-Moon’s potential bid for reelection next year, and with China’s veto power in the National Security Council, some argue that the UN is tip toeing around the issues when they should be supporting Nobel laureates and replacing Sha.
