We only learned of the murder in Xujiahui’s Grand Gateway mall last night through a very short brief on Shanghai Daily. But we soon discovered some eyewitness accounts – not surprisingly, the Wagas there had quite a few English-speaking foreigners who know how to use the internet.
A forum post on Shanghai Stuff with eye witness accounts has been piling up with comments over the night. While the original poster, Kim, didn’t see much (besides the body), others who were there soon chimed in with more details.
BIG NOTE: These ARE forum posts on the internet, so we’re all taking everything with a big grain of salt. But they are the only threads we have to grasp, considering Chinese media seems to be pointedly ignoring it. As of 9:15am, none of the newspapers have added more to the story.
A man named Andrey seems to have gotten the best look at the actual act:
I also witnessed what happened in grand gateway. It was just terrible…
The murdered guy was japanese and his friend (also japanese) tried to defend him but it happened so quickly and that guy died immediately.
Security were looking at the murderer when he was leaving, and none of them made an effort to stop him.
It was the most terrible thing I’ve ever seen in China during three year of living here. I often had lunch and dinner in wagas in grand gateway, but now it’s become a locus delicti. Im still shocked…
I was coming up to wagas right a the moment the murderer was walking away and shouting something. And in a couple of seconds I realized what happened. There were around ten guards in black suites who were looking at the bloody body. I came closer and found the man was already dead… He didn’t move and he didn’t breathe. The wagas waitress told me that they were confused of what happened. Two japanese dudes had had dinner right nearby the wagas entrance then a chinese man who looked like a deliverer (Pizza Hut, Mc. D, Sherpas maybe) suddenly came behind one of them and started punching the japanese in the head. Then he thrown the guy to the ground and finished the murder with a knife. After that he went away shouting some dirty words in chinese…
It’s hard to make an assumpion from what I saw, but It looks like there was a crazy exhausted deliverer who hates all these “rich” people enjoying “expensive” restaraunts. I dont’t know if overall hate to japanese has any relation to this case.
And I’m still wondering, whether I could do something if I had come to wagas just thirty second earlier…
Kim adds that it may not have been the Wagas exactly, but rather the Bistrow next to it where the victim was stabbed:
and….. i was sitting RIGHT there at the window AT THE TIME that the first security guy found the body. it seemed so weird. and.. i would love to know what happened if therw was even an investigation… becuase all the secruity were talking deeply and running around in circles for a while when i walked past before i went into bistrow and all of a sudden, one of them “found” the body, at the time i was sitting down…!!!! i was just as shocked as he seemed to be and all of them gathered around at the same time. And i only really remember seeing one policeman, and 8 secruity, and the oen that covered the body was a security guard with a suit on, not some paramedic or something…. ! where were the paramedics….
also, there was no one guarding or appearing to really be guarding the body thogh they had cordoned off the area with tape… i was so shocked i did not want to look over there,i was shaking a bit and feeling numb. the woman in bistrow said they saw nothing on the security cameras.. so the person must have been pretty knowledgeable on how not to get caught on camera… perhaps he pushed the guy to the ground and stabbed him out of people’s view and wihtout anyone knowing!!!!!
The victim has still not been identified.
As an aside, this recent stabbing makes me wonder if there’s something wrong with Xujiahui. As everyone probably remembers, the McDonalds across the street from Metro City was the location of an employee stabbing in March. And people who have been here a little longer know Grand Gateway was the location of a double suicide two years ago. Granted, it’s not like it’s the only place that deaths happen in the city, but it gives me pause at least. You don’t usually hear about this stuff around Jing’an temple.
