People out and about during work hours these last couple of days may have noticed the long, long lines forming outside of various bank around town. The China Construction Bank on Jiangsu Lu and Wuding Lu was especially insane this morning – with a line of eager, excited middle aged people snaking almost two blocks. What are they waiting for? Expo stamps.
That’s right: the Shanghai Expo ended 11 days ago, but Expo souvenir collection is still going strong. Yesterday was the first day banks all over Shanghai promised to exchange any coin for one of nine “special Expo souvenir coins,” which apparently is such a great deal that it’s worth camping out in front of banks all night to be the first ones in when they open in the morning. At one bank, there was already a line of 500 people outside at 6am.
Why would you EVER stand in a line for hours for something that banks are giving away for 1RMB? Assuming you’re not actually psyched about remembering Expo, it’s probably to sell it online. Some people have already posted their coins on popular trading sites for anywhere from 10RMB to 2000RMB. It is unclear who’s actually biting.
If you’re curious about what these coins look like, this will save you the wait:
