Sam’s Club – Fuzhou
If anyone was contemplating bulk buying rice or noodles, then get clearing out your cupboards! Sam’s Club (Wal-Mart’s membership only retail warehouse) is coming to Shanghai! Yay for 60 pack toilet rolls!
The US based store announced last week that they will be opening a Sam’s Club in Shanghai (Pudong New area) this December – just around Christmas and one year late! The store will be the 5th Sam’s Club in China and will also be the largest with three-storeys of bulk buying madness!
Located close to Longyang Lu on line 2, Sam’s Club will fit right in to the megastore neighborhood joining Decathlon and B&Q. Three floors of oversized tins and cartons, the store will cover 30,000 square meters (despite previous reports of the store being over 60,000 square meters). Open only to store card holders, membership is already on sale at the more than reasonable price of 150RMB…that’s what US$23 (£15).
Anyone who has been to Wal-Mart here in China will only be to aware of the differences between here and the States, and in a similar vein, whilst the Sam’s Clubs throughout the States aren’t aimed at high-end clientele, it seems that the new Shanghai store will be. In an interview with Global Times, He Wenying, Wal-Mart China manager, said that they will be “targeting middle-and-upper class income customers by providing a variety of over 10,000 imported products, all of which are typically five percent cheaper compared to the prices offered by other retailers selling the same goods.”
The new store will be the 5th Sam’s Club in China, with the first store opening in 1996 in Shenzhen. The other stores in Guangzhou, Fuzhou and Beijing. Not only will the Shanghai store be the largest but it will also be the most expensive. After two years of planning, the Shanghai store comes after a total investment of US$46 million, that’s over 300 million RMB.
Whilst we couldn’t find details of how to obtain membership, we reckon it’s worth a trip down there to investigate! If you get any more info on how to obtain a membership card, let us and everyone else know in the comments, we are excitedly waiting for our years worth of apple sauce!
