Shanghai loves it’s ladies, that’s for sure. In this town, members of the fairer sex can drink every night for free so easily. The only real problem: there’s too many options when you’re looking to have a fun night out with the girls. So in this series, we hit up all the ‘ladies only’ specials around town to rate them. That way you’ll know which are worth a sip, and which you ought to skip.
What: ‘Massive Mondays’ at Zapatas Note:This isn’t their true ladies night (that happens on Wednesdays) but this event gives ladies free booze so we’ve included it in our series anyway.
Where: 5 Hengshan Lu, Xuhui; 徐汇区，衡山路5号
Drink: Girls get handed free frozen margaritas until midnight and the boys don’t get left out either–they’re allowed free Carlsberg. I found the margaritas too syrupy so I pushed that aside after a few sips. I thought I’d try my luck getting some of that free beer that was on tap for the guys, but the bartender was having absolutely no gender bending and stuck me with another margarita.
You can also get your hands on some free tequila if you’re down with having it straight poured down your throat. At several random intervals during the night (we think it’s about every hour and a half or so) Zapatas gets it’s hired go-gos up on the bar to dance to the Tequila song for two minutes and pour shots of tequila into people’s open mouths.
Difficulty of bar access: On a scale of 1 to 5 (5 being the hardest), it’s a 3. There was a gnarly huddle of guys around the taps at one point but it was relatively hassle free.
Music: If you took the Billboard Hot 100 chart list from the past 3 years, shoved it into a playlist on iTunes and then pressed shuffle, that was basically it. There was some Kesha, Gaga, Far East Movement’s “Like a G6”, some get nasty, bump and grind rap. It also seemed like every third song reverted back to Katy Perry’s greatest hits (California Gurls, I Kissed a Girl, Hot n Cold, they played it all).
Atmosphere: It had all the sophistication of a drunken American college party, i.e. none. It pulls in a good-sized crowd: 90% foreign (dominated by the learning Chinese breed and the teaching English variety) and 99% under 30. It bore all the hallmarks of an “end-of-semester” bash too–hoochie mamas shaking their booty on the bar–inspiring amateurs (male-eek! and female) to hop on too, drinks served in plastic cups, a general lack of hygiene, and that one tipsy white boy who you don’t actually know but manages to be in all your photos anyway.
Female to Male ratio: 1:1.5. Those free beers helped even it out.
Overall: Monday nights at Zapatas will either make you feel really really young or really really old. What we mean is that it could help you reawaken your inner 18 year old who crashed all freshman year parties or it could make you think to yourself, “Damn, I am not cut out for this shit anymore.” If you think you belong to the second group, you’re better off holding out until Wednesday nights at this joint when it draws in a slightly older crowd. However, we should point out here that it was the only ladies night we could find happening on Mondays so if you’re unwilling to cough up some money, this is your only option.
Verdict: It’s Monday, do you really need to be drinking with college-aged partiers? Skip.
