Sure, you could spend the night gorging on turkey and smearing cranberry sauce all over your face, and we wouldn’t judge you for it – but in case you were into a more low cal, active and philanthropic mood, here’s something to consider: We and the awesome folks over at BEAN Shanghai have decided to make this year’s American Thankgiving actually about giving.
This Thursday, November 25, we’re hosting a Rocksgiving charity concert that promises to be a cornucopia of fun: four great bands and a whole bunch of raffle prizes (more on that later). For now though, here’s the info you should know:
WHAT: Rocksgiving Charity Concert
WHO IT BENEFITS: The Concordia Welfare & Education Fund (website here), a Hong Kong based non-profit organization that helps out with a host of poverty alleviation projects. The money raised from this specific concert will be donated to school lunches in migrant schools around Shanghai – so you’re bypassing your feeding frenzy to help them eat!
WHERE: Lune, 4F, 218 Xinle Lu by Donghu Lu
PRICE: 50RMB at the door (all of which will go to CWEF). Raffle tickets will be 10RMB per ticket.
Urbanatomy asked each band to write their own bio, which turned out to be kind of hilarious, so here they are below:
Boys Climbing Ropes: Born several years ago from a medley of rum and cigarette induced visions in one of the last remaining authentic taverns in Ottawa, Canada. Boys Climbing Ropes is a testament to the delight and folly of international displacement. Over the years in Shanghai, Boys Climbing Ropes have been developing their craft and picking their battles — just waiting for that huge, huge cash pay-off.
Duck Fight Goose: Duck Fight Goose was formed in 2009. Members are Duck, Goose, Panda and Dragon. They refuse all kinds of sadness and play funny games with their instruments. They were influenced mainly by themselves. They blended traditional-rock, experimental-rock and electronic music into a swinging and swagging yet psychedelic experience.
Friend or Foe: The story starts when the demon Moloch escaped from hell and rampaged through the heavens. While loose, he raped the pious angel Charoum and as a result of this tragic event she found herself pregnant. When her time came, it was not one child but three that emerged. She decided to raise them as innocent, pure children with no knowledge of the dark origins… Currently they take the stage as Friend or Foe, and curiously declined to state what exactly it is they do up there.
Rainbow Danger Club: First gig was at Harley’s Bar in June 2009. Released The New Atlantis EP online via their Bandcamp Page November 2010. Full-length album set to be released in early 2011. They describe their music as experimental rock.
So come! Because giving rocks.
