In Cafetique, Shanghaiist reviews coffee shops and cafes around Shanghai that provide the two things our writers need most in life: caffeine and wireless internet. How does your neighborhood hangout spot stack up?
What: Melange Oasis
Where: Jiashan Market, No. 37, Lane 550 Shanxi Nan Lu, near Shaoxing Lu; 陕西南路550弄37号, 近绍兴路
Atmosphere: Never has the name “oasis” been more appropriate than at this green concept cafe. Full window-paneled doors open up to a lovely little square outside, allowing plenty of light to stream in. Inside it’s vibrant, a haven for yogis and a slightly alternative bunch. The cafe owner goes eco friendly wherever possible (even with the toilet paper) and if you look around, you’ll also find tips on how to live more earth friendly. It features three fantastic hammocks you can rest or swing around in and if that isn’t enough to win you over, it stocks an incredibly large range of hard to find (without a subscription) English magazines.
Music: The afternoon we were there, it was chilled out bossa nova and French jazz.
Food and Drink: They do a lot of different daily specials (pastas, sandwiches and other mains are 58 – 65 RMB, soup of the day is 40 RMB) which isn’t particularly cheap. They emphasize a lot of homemade goodies such as hummus served with vegetable sticks, olives and pita bread (65 RMB) and desserts. The oatmeal and chocolate cookies were large, about 5 inches in diameter, and they should be for RMB 15. While it was good it wasn’t anything to write home about. The creative beverages however, might be worth it. The specially crafted ginger ale is 30RMB and the melonade (watermelon and lemon) is RMB 35. If you like rum, add it into your coffee, hot chocolate or tea for 55 RMB.
Wifi: Password protected and fast. There were a good number of outlets strategically positioned and staff brought out the extension cord for our convenience without us having to ask. A++
Overall: It’s a nightmare trying to find this place for first timers but when you arrive at this little oasis, you’ll be glad it is so hidden. Melange Oasis guarantees a quiet environment and it’s commitment to the healthy and the homemade make Element Fresh seem irrelevant. It’d be nice if it were a bit more affordable but we’ll still be coming back.
