Shanghai loves its ladies, that’s for sure. In this town, members of the fairer sex can drink every night for free so easily. The only real problem: there’s too many options when you’re looking to have a fun night out with the girls. So in this series, we hit up all the ‘ladies only’ specials around town to rate them. That way you’ll know which are worth a sip, and which you ought to skip.
What: ‘Gossip’ Thursdays at the Apartment
Where: 3/F, 47 Yongfu Lu, near Fuxing Xi Lu; 永福路47号3楼, 近复兴西路
Drink: The classic offering–free sparkling wine from 7 – 11pm.
Difficulty of bar access: It’s a 5 person deep crowd, you tell me.
Music: Ai yai yai, it was wrong, just wrong. Songs from the Black Eyed Peas, Nelly Furtado’s ‘Promiscuous’, and several odes to Justin Timberlake via ‘Like I love you’ and ‘Signs’ does not a set make. But it’s not like anybody was dancing…or maybe that’s why nobody was dancing.
Atmosphere: Much ado about nothing. Working professionals favor the Apartment as always but on Thursdays the self-satisfaction becomes pronounced. Nearly all the boys and girls put an effort into their dress but in my humble opinion ruffled cocktail dresses, a clutch, and 5 inch heels is overdoing it for what the place is.
Female to Male ratio: 1:2. The girls were all young (twenties, early thirties) but with the guys you can spot a few well into their forties and beyond. It could’ve been our bad luck, but we encountered the worst types there. The spitters, the ones that do that very original “joke” that you should get them a drink since it’s ladies night, the ones that buy you the cheapest mixed drink on the menu and believe that the gin and tonic earns them rights to tail you the whole night before storming away like an overgrown schoolboy when you talk to your own friends. Yup, that was some awful conversation.
Overall: We like Apartment, we really do. And we’d go there any day of the week except their ladies night when you get a bunch of non-regulars in there and it forgets that it’s a bar, not a club. Everything that we like about the usually chill hang out evaporates on Thursdays. The Apartment is too tiny for what it pulls and the way the PR girl downstairs was really fixated on using a velvet rope was pretty hilarious. I walked in and out several times and she took the pains to get up from her seat and unhook the rope every single time to let me pass, except oh right, there’s nobody waiting outside anyway! Who she was trying to convince of their exclusivity is a mystery to me.
