Trawling through Vimeo brought our attention to this China-made French movie called “Laowai,” which from the trailer, looks to be about a French guy who plays at the JZ Club (and who just happens to be Lions of Puxi member Gauthier Roubichou) and his relationship with a Chinese girl.
Film Business Asia has a more comprehensive summary of the events:
Shanghai, the present day. Paul (Gauthier Roubichou), a French freelance IT engineer, meets Mei (Barbie Han), who teaches Chinese to foreign students, in a DVD store one day and he invites her to a club where he sings with an amateur band. The two start dating, and six months later she moves in with him. The night before he’s due to travel with her to Wuhan to meet her parents during Chinese New Year, Paul gets drunk at a party thrown by his ex-girlfriend, Australian-Chinese Vicky (Jenevieve Chang), and ends up in her bedroom after passing out. When Mei finds out, she breaks up with him and travels alone to Wuhan; but Paul follows the next day, hoping to patch things up.
The movie, which Hollywood Reporter has called “an unassuming romantic drama,” premiered at the Vietnam Film Festival and is supposedly “one that could well be the beginning of a larger trend in Asian cinema.” No word yet on how we can see it here in Shanghai, where it was filmed.
