This past weekend was a particularly bloody one here in Shanghai as we had at least 3 separate cases of violent crimes occur across the city:
Firstly, a man sliced open a teenage girl’s throat after she refused his romantic advances. The victim, Zhang Yuhong, had her carotid artery slit outside the hotpot restaurant she worked at on Minxing Road and Baotou Road. A young man in his twenties was detained – Zhang’s family say he’d been chasing after Zhang for months despite her repeated refusals.
Zhang’s being treated at the Changhai Hospital but a 4 year old wasn’t as fortunate. The small girl who is pictured above, was taken from her home and killed on Friday in the Baoshan district. The parents run a small breakfast stall and leave the house around 4am everyday, leaving their daughter at home alone. That Friday morning, the parents were informed their apartment had been broken into soon after they left for work. They rushed home to find their daughter missing along with a bank card and within 30 minutes they received a phone call from the kidnapper asking for the bank card’s pin number. “You have only 10 minutes or I will sell your daughter,” the man threatened. Though the police caught the suspect by 8pm that night–shockingly it was their young 16 year old neighbor–their daughter had already been thrown into a creek and drowned.
A 46 year old man surnamed Yu was apprehended after a team of police and security officers spotted him acting suspiciously on the corner of Xuchang Lu and Huimin Lu. Police say it seemed that he was avoiding them and when the officers stopped to question Yu, he couldn’t produce proper identification – they also noted that though he claimed to be from Heilongjiang, he did not speak with a northeastern accent. They were about to lead him to the police station for more questioning when Yu suddenly brandished a 20cm long knife stabbing 5 of them. He was eventually was subdued and taken into custody. Yu’s been wanted for a 2004 murder of a pregnant woman in Haiyang, Shandong and a 2006 murder in a carjacking case in Yuyao, Zhejiang.
