If you’re standing at the fruit stand sizing up the oranges but can’t shake the feeling that somehow they just look too juicy, bright, and fresh to be true, you may actually be right. Shanghai authorities have jumped into action after consumers reported that red dye was rubbing off on their hands after directly handling a batch of tainted oranges.
Turns out, the oranges, which were sold at some local markets around town, had been dyed with a toxic industrial wax to make the fruit look more appealing. The sellers of the suspect oranges have already been ordered to halt sales and tests are underway to trace the origin – for the time being it’s not clear whether they come from Shanghai or neighboring Jiangxi. There hasn’t been news of any people falling ill from the wax but the dyes in question have been linked to memory loss, respiratory problems and immune system damage and authorities are asking consumers to come forward if they spot any such irregularities.
