“If he’s out of jail how should I know where he is, and if he’s in jail then I also don’t know where he is”
– Inner Mongolia government spokesman Wen Fei
In response to allegations that police did not actually release from jail one of China’s longest-serving dissidents, ethnic Mongolian rights activist Hada. Hada was arrested in 1995 by the Inner Mongolian Public Security Bureau for helping establish the Inner Mongolian People’s Party, which opposes “colonization by the Han people and striving for self-determination, freedom and democracy in Southern [Inner] Mongolia.” He was scheduled for release last Friday, but his whereabouts are now unknown. Wen Fei said he had never heard of Hada.
