True love exists! It really does! Maybe not in Shanghai, but in a smaller city not far from here — Suzhou.
Meet Colin from the United States who first came to China in 1995. Five years ago, upon graduation from college, Colin arrived in Taiyuan, in Shanxi province, to work as an English teacher. It was there where he met a girl by the name of Chen Yahuan, or Xiaohuan. Love eventually blossomed between the two, but some time in 2007, tragedy struck. Xiaohuan was hit in a bad car accident and slipped into a coma for two weeks. Doctors told Colin to prepare for the worst and even made him sign indemnity forms.
Colin’s life now basically revolves all around Xiaohuan. To take care of her, Colin now works just half a day each week and spends all the rest of his time with her.
The most difficult time for Colin was when Xiaohuan just awoke from her coma, recalls Colin. At that time, he was applying for a student visa with a university in Suzhou. Student services informed him that he needed to attend class everyday or his visa would be revoked. To make things work, Colin would attend class in the morning, and work in the afternoon and evening to make money to cover Xiaohuan’s medical costs. Friends and family members of Colin have since gathered around to chip in.
Says Xiaohuan of Colin, “I think he’s really exhausted, having to work and make money to take care of me. Without me, he could have lived a very happy life. He’s got a very kind heart… and he’s a very responsible man. I never expected him to stick around this long.”
