The authorities have finally made good on their decision to demolish Ai Weiwei’s studio in Shanghai’s northern district of Jiading. Supporters on scene have been uploading a real-time photostream of the sad operation happening today.
The demolition was announced in early November, and Ai Weiwei claims it is a direct reprisal for his outspoken political activism. Supporters gathered at the studio on November 7 to commemorate the as-of-yet unopened space before it’s destruction (pictures here.) Ai was detained under house arrest and prohibited from attending the banquet.
Ai Weiwei continues to ruffle feathers with an art exhibit planned for Taiwan later this year. He also gathered with others in November at the trial of Wu Yuren, a political activist who supporters claim was arrested on chumped up charges.
