According to Shanghai Daily, massively popular microblogging platforms like Sina and Sohu are quickly becoming the best new way to find love in China. So guys, you can forget texting, calling or god forbid talking to the girl. Now you can find true love in three simple steps: 1) locate female 2) lurk 3) initiate contact.
These microblog dating channels work by putting women “in the spotlight” and allowing men to browse and subsequently follow the women they might be interested in. That’s where the stalking part starts:
Some men who follow women are even referred to as “zombies” because they don’t post any of their own personal information on the microblog. They open the account solely to watch women.
These zombies believe this allows them to learn more about a particular woman, including her likes, dislikes and habits, before they decide if they want to initiate contact with her.
“At least you don’t have to spend a couple hours with a girl who is no good to you,” said Tom Xu, a microblog zombie who has followed several girls at once to see who is most suitable for him.
Okay, so maybe it’s not that creepy since the girl is voluntarily showcasing herself, and the men are (allegedly) intending to eventually ask them out in the real world.
Sohu’s arranged an even more exciting process, where each woman who joins their dating channel uploads a short introductory video clip. Every day, Sohu chooses one of these clips to showcase as the “daily star,” thus propelling the selected girl into the spotlight and into the arms of thousands of followers.
