People, what did we just tell you about being careful with fireworks? A damper was put on new year celebrations in Shenyang after fireworks burnt down a 5-star hotel. The Dynasty Wanxin building complex, located on Qingnian Street of Heping District, was comprised of three towers — the fire quickly engulfed Tower A and B and gutted them but left Tower C intact. It broke out just thirteen minutes after midnight at Tower B, the apartment section of the Dynasty Wanxin complex and quickly spread to the neighboring Tower A which housed their 5-star hotel.
All the 50-odd people in the hotel were evacuated. No casualties were reported and the fire was put under control at 4:35 am according to Shenyang Municipal Public Security Bureau. Nonetheless, we found this bit from Xinhua’s news report quite discomforting: “Fire engines, whose water guns could jet water only 50 meters high, were helpless at the fire which flamed on the top of Tower A, 219 meters high.” We had similar problems during the terrible Jing’an fire and fire engine water canons were also unable to reach the higher floors.
To top it off, one of our staffers reports witnessing a building on fire at midnight just three blocks away from where the Jiaozhou Rd fire occurred. Flames billowed out of a building last night approximately on the 20th floor. It was successfully put out not too long after but blackened bits of the apartment high rise could be seen this morning.
Questionable fire safety much? You think fire safety regulators would’ve learned from the massively embarrassing CCTV headquarters fire. But please, be careful for these next two explosive-laden weeks.
