The Steelers face off with the Packers in the Super Bowl this year and the game kicks off at 7:30am on Monday morning (Shanghai time.) Because of that fortuitus convergence of Super Bowl with the CNY holiday, there will thankfully be far fewer people heading to work drunk around noon on Monday. We mentioned a few places to watch the game in our Weekendist, but thought you guys could use a better roundup of all the breakfast and booze deals. For all bars listed below, I’d recommend getting there as early as possible if you want a place to sit.
Bubba’s is arguably the most red-blooded NFL-obsessed American bar in Shanghai, and I’ve been told the best place to watch the big game. This year, they’ve got a new location at Expo Village, as well as a few exciting deals to entice those of you who think Hongqiao should basically be considered another province. Entrance is free (a definite plus compared to Malone’s and Big Bamboo) and they’ll have happy hour prices all morning. Doors are at 6:30am, and on your way in you can pay 20RMB for a wristband that will get you a FREE BEER every time either team scores!! They have breakfast burritos on the menu, and drawings for Sherpa’s vouchers and NFL gear. Both locations will be open and showing the game.
Free, 6:30am doors
Hongqiao: 2262 Hongqiao Lu, near Jianhe Lu Next to the Hongqiao (虹桥路2262号, 近剑河路)
Expo Village: 1101 Xueyue Lu (世博村, 雪野路1101弄101号)
Malone’s will be showing the game at both locations as well, and the entrance fee is 100RMB this year, which can be used either for breakfast (food plus coffee/tea) or drinks (4 bottles or 2 standard drinks.) Doors at 6am. Also a local American mainstay, it’ll probably be packed so head there early.
100RMB, 6am doors
Jing’an: 255 Tongren Lu, near Nanjing Xi Lu (铜仁路255号近南京西路)
Pudong: 2/F, Thumb Plaza, 199 Fangdian lu, near Dingxiang lu (芳甸路199弄, 大拇指广场, 近丁香路)
100RMB entrance fee and doors at 6am, all three locations showing the game. I went to the BB last year for super bowl and wasn’t disappointed – it was packed and people were getting loaded left and right. The price tag is the only bummer, as you can’t chose between food or booze, but it’s an all-you-can-eat buffet so you can get your money’s worth. Bloody mary deals offered all day.
100RMB, 6am doors
Jing’an:123 Nanyang Lu, near Tongren Lu (南阳路123号, 近铜仁路)
Hongqiao: Hong Mei Entertainment Street, No. 20, Lane 3338 Hongmei Lu, (虹梅路3338号虹梅路休闲街26号)
Jinqiao: 381 Hongfeng Lu, near Biyun Lu (红枫路381号，近碧云路)
Boxing Cat Brewery
Boxing cat will show the game at both locations, and are encouraging reservations (Sinan Mansions: 6426 0360, Fuxing Branch: 6431 2091.) Since they give no door times, that probably means if you don’t call, you’ll be standing. Happy hour prices and options from their brunch and appetizer menus. Expensive, but arguably great if you crave American micro-brews while partaking in this favorite American pastime.
Free, reservations recommended:
82 Fuxing Lu, near Yongfu Lu (复兴路82号, 近永福路)
Unit 26A, Sinan Mansions, 519-521 Fuxing Lu, near Sinan Lu (思南公馆26A 复兴中路519号近思南路)
By far the cheapest set deal is at Racks, where 50RMB gets you a set breakfast. No mention of drink deals, but at least entry is free! Like Boxing Cat, they’re allowing reservations so call 5212 5971 and get yourself a table. They don’t list an opening time, so reserving is probably for the best.
Free, 5/F, 221 Jinxian Lu, near Shaanxi Nan Lu (进贤路221号5楼, 近陕西南路)
On the same block as Malone’s and Big Bamboo, The Spot is also screening the game live, opening at 6am. 99RMB gets you breakfast (it’s unclear from the flyer whether it’s a choice) and happy hour prices for drinks will run until the end of the game.
Free?, 6am doors, 331 Tongren Lu, near Beijing Lu (铜仁路331号，近北京西路)
For those of you avoiding entrance fees, the Camel might be a good option. You can get breakfast starting at 6am (doesn’t specify if they are open earlier) and it’s not clear whether there will be drink deals.
Free, 6am breakfast, 1 Yueyang Lu, near Dongping Lu (岳阳路1号, 近东平路)
Windows Too (Jing’an)
For those of you too soft-serve to get up at 6am, Windows Too shows the earliest replay of the game at10am, with happy hour deals running all day. Wings and two pints for 30RMB!
Free, 10am, 2/F, City Plaza, 1618 Nanjing Xi Lu, near Huashan Lu, next to Haagen Dazs (南京西路1618号久光百货X楼, 近华山路)
All these sports bars, and others, will no doubt be replaying the game on Monday evening, check out their websites for show times. One crucial aspect that remains unclear from all the event flyers is whether the Super Bowl commercials will be shown. Some feeds will come from outside the US and definitely wont include the ads (for those of you who somehow don’t know, Super Bowl ads are usually the best of the year, each 30-second slot is said to cost around $3 million.) Either way, you can always see them online after the game (or apparently before the game, like this gem done by VW.) Have fun everybody and enjoy the game!!
